What Would Jana Do?
Let me explain.
Mike and I were talking a few days ago about finances and how we need to set new goals and start paying off some of our debt. Me, being the little punk I was being, started to whine and complain. I cried and moaned and sniffeled. And cried some more. I was being a bad citizen with some bad shopping habits (Carol, I blame you! You're a bad influence.) and Mike was upset. After all, we have a lot of work to do on the house that we need save up for. So anyway, who's name comes up but Jana's? Why? Because she has six, yes, six (that's 6) kids. They live off one income.
So if they can do it, we can do it. Right?
I've tried scaling down on my spending before and you know what ALWAYS happens? I do so good and then at the end of the month I go crazy because I've done soooooo good all month. Bad Bianca. BAD!
I have been working really hard on changing my mentality. Completely.
The last three weeks, it has worked. You know how I do it? Do you want to know? Do ya? Really? It's simple.
I think WWJD. What Would Jana Do?
For instance, I go to the store and instead of thinking, "Oh that's cute. I want that. I can afford that," I now think, "Do I really need that? Can I get that cheaper somewhere else? Do I have a coupon for that? If I were Jana, would I buy that?" And it works really, really well.
EXCEPT Jana always has one up on me. I've been thinking about buying new bedsheets for our bed. I've had them almost 5 years and got them on super duper clearance at Eddie Bauer Home (before they went out of business). For everything I think I paid only $300. That was a lot of money for me back then. But now I look back and think, I got such a STEAL on those sheets!
So anyway, I've been looking to see what kind of bedding I could buy at Macys (of course looking for their super duper sales and seeing how much it would be after my sales coupon). And guess who writes on their blog, "I also want to make a big quilt this summer for our bed. Ours is falling apart. I want it to be multi-colored little 2-inch squares. Easy but tedious but colorful but tedious."
Thanks, Jana. You just burst my happy bubble with your little crafty ways. I mean come on. "Crayon Cozy's"??? Pshhhhaaah.

Let me counsel you my darling pet. Together we will get you eating mush for breakfast and hinting to Katie for her DI clothes bag.
i love the banter. you guys are stinkin funny!
Oh, Bianca! You crack me up! I love it! We've done the same thing about making sure we only buy things that we need, not just to spend. It's hard, but we're already redoing some things to our house that we've saved for and it's a good feeling! I love to brag to Bruce as to how much I've put in savings and the left over money in our checking account. It makes me feel like I can pat myself of the back to show him that we can eventually move into a bigger home. The feeling feels better than the spending! GO FOR IT!
Dang Jana, always making us feel like we aren't as thrifty as her. Well take this Jana, I bought a really cute purse at Savers this week for $3!!! Yay for me. Now as for you Bianca, since this is your blog, Way to go. I love the feeling of saving money almost as much as I love spending money, almost but not quite!
