But to keep the feel of open-ness we decided to leave a cut out. We went as far as we could because Michael didn't want to get into the electrical. I guess we could have gone over more, but maybe it was laziness or maybe I was hoping to put another kitchen cabinet on the opposite side of the wall. Whatever reason, we decided to leave it there. But now I kind of regret it.
So this is the dry wall up, we have since put mud on it and still have to sand it, and texture it.
This is the after picture which does even do justice to the work we did. We took out the existing light fixtures and put in 6 new recessed lights, sanded, textured and removed popcorn off the ceiling. Removed 30 years worth of stink from the ceiling. It smelled like old people for a few days. We had taped up plastic on the walls and floor.
So now we have to decide what we are going to do with the family room. We bought a new brown leather couch and have a fire place and that's about it. I would like to make it a nice comfy room to sit and talk and where the kids can play. The living room is more like the television room and not really formal at all.
It's been crazy trying to function in this mess! I can definitely start to feel like Michael and I are both irritable from everything going on. I'm just trying to stay positive and look forward to having a more functionable home!

Can I come over when you're finished? Looks like a lot of work. How do y'all know how to do all that?
It's looking AWESOME! I really like the cut out. Our first three months of marriage was remodeling the kitchen. Now that's a mess! Food was in boxes every where. If you've ever been to our house, there just wasn't any room for that sort of mess. We were real happy when it was done.
Christy - I'm hoping it will be soon, but yes you can come over! A friend helped with the drywall and I did the popcorn (I heard from lots of people how to do it). And if you ask anyone at Home Depot, they are very helpful. I think we will tackle the kitchen ceiling ourselves (removing the drop down and pushing it up about a foot).
Wow, that looks like a lot of work! I'm impressed you are willing to take on a big project like that.
Popcorn ceilings. . . I keep dreaming that I might get the guts to have at it with ours, but it hasn't happened yet:)
Wow I can't believe that you guys are doing this with two little kids! Kudos to you!
I can't believe you have undertaken all of that! Wow!!
I hope it gets done soon and I am sure if will look beautiful, because you have such talent and eye for those kinds of things :D
