Ok, ok. So I have to admit that Denise's comment about the whole toilet paper thing has bothered me from the day I read it. Lucky for all you devoted readers, I actually had to go to Costco to get some. At last! Now you will finally have the truth about whether or not Costco's toilet paper is a DEAL or NO DEAL.
It's relatively simple my dear Watson...
1 bag = 36 rolls...... $17.99 + tax (7.8%) = $19.39
$19.39/36 = $0.54/roll
1 roll = 53.1 sq. ft.
$0.54/53.1 sq. ft = $0.0101/sq. ft
I was at Target and saw 450 sq. ft of TP for $5.49 (Target brand, so I'm assuming it's the cheapest).
So $5.49 + tax (7.8%) = $5.92/450 sq. ft = $0.0132/sq.ft
BUT prices change based on tax rate; Chandler/Gilbert is 7.8%, Mesa is 8.05%, Tempe is 8.1%.
ME, being the engineer that I am and living and shopping in different cities, I got to thinking, "At what point will taxes affect cost in toilet paper"?
Not everyone lives close to a Chandler/Gilbert Costco. So I ran the numbers. . . Costco wins. Even if you lived in El Mirage or Carefree, where tax is 9%, Costco still wins.
So then another scenario came into my head. . .
How much would Target TP have to be to make it the same as Costco? The answer...
$4.55 including tax.
So kiddo's unless Walmart or Target has a sale on TP, Costco really is cheaper.

You did just what I've been wanting to do for days. So thanks for doing my homework for me, NERD! Now give me your lunch money.
My problem is that I can't fork out 18 dollars at one time for toilet paper.
Good thing Jenny purchases TP at Costco, I use a lot of that stuff.
On the other side of the TP, looks like SRP has been bringing back the Engineer! Too bad PVARs, CRDRs, CRAIs, EDCs,SWMS.... and the Legacy Project caused you to loose about 55 points off your IQ HAHAHAHA
That's what I said... Ok not exactly what I said but the end result was the same. I was right. And I get what you're saying Jana, I rarely spend $18 on anything so forking it out for a thing of tp seems outrageous but if it does feel good to not have to buy it for months on end.
Another plug for the costco toilet paper is that each roll is individually wrapped. I don't know why, but I totally like that feature.
Thanks for getting down to the nitty gritty Bianca. Now I'll feel like such the savvy shopper next time I stock up.
Jana - Just think it's three times what you would normally get so it's two trips less that you would have to make.
David - TMI.
Denise - If I only need TP then that is the ONLY thing I buy. It's so easy to buy other stuff you don't need. Then you walk out of there less $200 in your bank account.
Marie- Glad I could boost your ego :p
Factoring the few less trips you take and the small amount of gas you saved not doing it - adds to the savings too!
Then again, like you said, factoring the temptation to buy unnecessary things on your Costco trip could make the TP $50-$150 more than any other TP. We just have to walk into Costco with our Will Power armor on!
